Keeping medical equipment safe: why the right testing matters

Facilities managers in medical environments do not need reminding that equipment must be safe.

The harder question is whether the testing regime actually reflects how the equipment is used, the risks it presents and the consequences if it fails.

A medical environment may contain everything from ordinary office appliances and chargers to treatment equipment, diagnostic devices and battery-powered clinical equipment. Those assets do not all present the same risks, and they should not automatically be approached in the same way.

The real value of testing comes from applying the right test, to the right equipment, at the right interval.

Start with the equipment, not the test

One of the biggest mistakes in electrical safety management is to begin with the question: “When is our PAT testing due?” A better starting point is: “What equipment do we have, how is it used, and what testing does it actually require?”

A desktop printer in an admin office does not have the same risk profile as electrically powered equipment used in direct patient care. These risks increase when a device is moved between treatment rooms, repeatedly plugged and unplugged, exposed to cleaning fluids or used throughout the working day.

Testing regimes should take account of factors such as the type of equipment, how frequently it is used, whether it is portable or regularly moved, the environment in which it operates, its service and maintenance history, the potential impact of failure manufacturer guidance, previous test results and recurring faults.

That allows testing to become part of a wider equipment-management strategy, rather than simply a recurring calendar exercise.

Remember - Not every fault is visible

Visual inspection is important, but it has limitations. A cable may appear intact while deterioration is taking place internally. Protective components may no longer perform as intended. Leakage currents or insulation issues may develop without creating an obvious external sign.

Equally, not every problem discovered during testing means a device has suddenly become dangerous. The test result needs to be understood in context.

Has the equipment changed since its previous test? Is there a deterioration trend? Has it been repaired? Is the result outside acceptable parameters for that particular type of device? This is where good testing should provide more than a green sticker. It should generate information that helps facilities teams make informed decisions.

Your test records should tell you something useful. Over time, testing records can reveal patterns that are easy to miss when each asset is viewed in isolation.
